Some gifts get admired once and put on a shelf. A personalized chess and checkers set gets pulled out on a Sunday afternoon, again and again — which is exactly why it works so well as a present. It's a game people actually play, made a little more theirs with an engraving that turns a nice board into a specific one.
If you're looking for a personalized chess and checkers set that isn't just another catalogue item, here's what to know about the idea, and how we make ours.
One board, three games
Our version is a 3-in-1 wooden board game: chess, checkers and sudoku, built into a single set. One side carries an 8×8 grid that works for both chess and checkers — the same board, two different tile sets. Chess tiles carry engraved piece symbols; checkers tiles are left smooth. Flip to the other side and you get a 9×9 sudoku grid with the block lines engraved in, plus a set of numbered tiles from 1 to 9.
The tiles themselves aren't loose pieces balanced on top — they sit in carved-out recesses in the board, so they rest flush and don't slide around mid-game. Coordinates (A–H and 1–8) are engraved along all four edges, mirrored so both players can read them from their own side of the table. It's a small detail, but it's the kind that tells you a set was actually designed to be played, not just displayed.

Where the personalization goes
The engraving space sits on the sudoku side of the board — a name, a short message, initials, or a small logo, burned directly into the wood alongside the grid. That's the part that turns "a chess set" into "the chess set we got for the retirement" or "the one with the kids' names on it."
We keep the wording simple on purpose: a name and a date, or a short line like "family game night," reads better burned into wood than anything long or clever. If you're not sure what to put, just send us the occasion — that's usually enough for us to suggest something that fits.
Who actually gets this as a gift
A personalized chess and checkers set works for a wider range of occasions than people expect, because it isn't tied to one relationship or one age group:
Anniversaries, when a couple wants something to do together rather than something to look at. Retirement, when someone finally has the Sunday afternoons to use it. Housewarmings, for the first proper coffee-table game in a new place. Corporate gifts, when a client or team appreciates something that isn't a pen or a branded notebook. And family gifts generally, since sudoku gives non-chess-players a reason to sit at the same table.
Because it's three games in one board, it also solves the usual gifting problem of guessing whether the recipient actually plays chess. If they don't, checkers or sudoku still gets used.
Why an engraved board beats a shop-bought one
A standard chess set is much like thousands of others in the same price range — nice enough, but interchangeable. What changes the equation isn't the game itself, it's the engraving. A name burned along the edge, a wedding date worked into the sudoku corner, a short line that only means something to the person receiving it: that's what separates "a chess set" from "the chess set." It also means the gift keeps doing its job long after the occasion — every time the board comes out for a game, the engraving is there too, quietly part of the object rather than stuck on as an afterthought.
It's also a gift that scales well. One board works for a couple, a family, or a small team, which makes it a useful option when you're buying for a group rather than a single recipient — everyone gets a stake in the same object instead of a pile of individual presents.
Keeping the set together
A board and two sets of tiles need somewhere to live between games. A personalized engraved wooden box makes a natural pairing — sized to hold both tile sets, with its own engraving on the lid so the box matches the board it belongs to. It's a small addition that keeps the gift feeling complete rather than like two separate purchases.
If chess isn't quite the right fit
Not every household is a game-night household, and that's fine — the idea behind personalization still applies elsewhere in our range. Our personalized wooden puzzle with a Smart Tag takes the same idea in a different direction: a hand-finished wooden puzzle with a hidden tag built in, so scanning it with a phone reveals a photo, a video or a message once the last piece is placed. It's a good alternative when you want the personal engraving and the "made for this person" feeling, without needing anyone to already like board games.
A gift made from an idea, not a template
That's really the point behind everything we make: you bring the idea — a name, a date, an inside joke, a family tradition — and we work out how to get it onto the object. A chess and checkers set is just one of the more satisfying ways to do that, because it keeps earning its place long after it's unwrapped.
Every piece is hand-finished and made in the EU. If you've got an occasion in mind and aren't sure exactly what to engrave, just reach out — we're happy to help you figure it out.
